Tawhiid and its Types – (A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE FOR THE NEW MUSLIM)

The first obligation upon you is to know Allah through His Tawhid. This term Tawhid, as it relates to the aspect of the Arabic language, means to make something one. As it relates to the religion of Islam, Tawhid means to single Allah out with all acts of worship.

Tawhid is of three types.

1. Tawhid al-Rububiyyah or Tawhid of Allah’s Lordship. This means to have belief that Allah is the sole Creator of everything and that He controls and disposes of all affairs in the heavens and earth and all that is in between them. One can also say that it is to single Allah out in His actions, such as that He is the sole Creator of all of mankind, the sole Provider of all of mankind, the only One who gives life and causes death, and other than that from His actions. He has no partners in -any of that.

Affirming this type of Tawhid is not sufficient for one to be a Muslim, as the disbelievers in the time of our Prophet Muhammad acknowledged this type of Tawb1d, but still, that did not enter them into Islam. The reason is because they still directed acts of worship to other than Allah. Because of that, Allah and His messenger deemed them to be disbelievers.

Allah commanded His Prophet Muhammad to say to them:

“Say, “Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight and who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living and who arranges [every] matter?” They will·say “Allah”, so say, “Then will you not fear Him?” [Yunus 10:31]

This verse shows you that the disbelievers already affirmed Allah’s actions (al-Rububiyyah) and knew that He had no partner in those matters. But even with this, they turned acts of worship, such as seeking blessings, supplication, and prayer to other than Allah.

They directed them towards saints and righteous men, stones, trees, and other false deities, believing they could bring benefit to them or intercede for them with Allah. these were some of the false beliefs that Allah sent His Messengers to eliminate, because all of that constitutes setting up rivals, equals and partners with Allah.

2. Tawbid al-Uluhiyyah or Tawbid of worship. This is to have belief that Allah is the only One worshipped in truth and that He has no partners in that. One can also say it is that the servants single out Allah with their actions, such as du’a’ (supplication), nadhr (vowing), dhabb (slaughtering), khawf (fear), tawwakul (placing your trust), and every other type of worship that Allah commanded with.
