A Grammar of The Arabic Language. The book was translated from German by Caspari Translated. and W. Wright edited With Numerous Additions. They made Corrections he was a professor of Arabic at The University of Cambridge.

A GRAMMAR OF THE ARABIC LANGUAGE

The Second Edition of Wright’s Grammar of the Arabic Language had been out of circulation for a long time before the author’s death, but he never had the time to prepare a New Edition.

With the need for it growing, Prof. W. Robertson Smith, who deservedly assumed Wright’s post, decided to take on the assignment. He started it with his customary zeal, but the disease that took his life soon interrupted his efforts.

The professor had printed 56 pages at his death, while the revision had extended over 30 pages more. In addition, Robertson Smith had made use of some notes of mine, which he had marked with my initials. For this reason, among others, the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press invited me, through Prof. Bevan, to continue the revision.

I agreed after much debate, prompted primarily by my admiration for one of my dearest friends’ superb work and a desire to finish what another good friend had started.

Prof. Bevan further stated that he would correct the English style and see the book through the publishing process. I have, of course, followed Robertson Smith’s procedure in the section of the Grammar that he amended.

In square brackets, minor adjustments and additions, as well as suggestions provided by A. Muller, Fleischer, and other scholars, are listed. I only added my initials in circumstances when it felt important to shoulder all of the burdens.

Aside from the written additions list and revisions at the conclusion of the Second Volume, Wright had scribbled in the margins of his copy some new examples (mostly from the Nakaid) that had been included without any distinguishing mark, unless they looked utterly redundant.

I have found very few notes by Robertson Smith on the portion he had not revised; almost all of these have been marked with his initials. Wright’s text has been altered in a comparatively small number of passages (for instance, § 252, § 353), where I felt sure that he would have done it himself. Once or twice Wright has noted on the margin “wants revision.”

‘The notes bearing upon the Comparative Grammar of the Semitic languages have for the most part been replaced by references to Wright’s Comparative Grammar, published after his death by Robertson Smith (1890).

Mr. Du Pré Thornton owes me a duty of gratitude, who pointed out various errors in my work. But my heartfelt gratitude goes to my great friend and colleague Prof. Bevan, who has not only gone to the bother of getting this revised version through the press but has also contributed to its improvement through numerous judicious remarks. The printers are currently working on the Second Volume.
