Book Description

The life story of Tipu Sultan, an influential historical figure, has been notably absent from comprehensive and impartial accounts. Early works like Wilks’s History of Mysore were published hastily after the fall of Seringapatam and were clearly lacking in complete information. Moreover, Wilks, as noted by James Mill, seemed reluctant to commend the Sultan but eager to attribute to him the worst qualities of humanity. Bowring’s Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan merely echoed Wilks’s narrative without significant contributions. While there are brief references to Tipu’s career in general Indian histories, most of these are marked by passionate and unfounded denunciations.

Conversely, more recent Urdu biographies have overly extolled Tipu Sultan, creating an aura of excessive praise. In this present work, however, a sincere effort has been made to present an accurate and balanced portrayal of Tipu Sultan, stripping away the layers of fiction and distortion that have surrounded his legacy.

Given that the majority of Tipu’s life was spent in military campaigns, a substantial portion of this work is dedicated to analyzing these campaigns and battles. Nonetheless, other facets of his life and rule have not been neglected. Adequate attention has been paid to the causes and consequences of wars. Furthermore, the book thoroughly explores Tipu’s interactions with various powers, including the English, the French, the Nizam, the Marathas, and the Ottoman Sultan.

The final three chapters of the book delve into the administration and military structure of Tipu Sultan’s government, his reforms, his religious policies, his efforts to promote industrialization and state socialism, and a detailed examination of his character, accomplishments, and failures. This comprehensive study is intended to enable readers to form a more informed judgment about this remarkable historical figure.
