THE VERB.

The generality of Arabic verbs consists of three radical letters, which arc most distinctly exhibited in the 3rd pers. sing. masc. of the preterit; this, therefore, is regarded as the root of the verb, and the ground-form in each conjugation.

There are thirteen forms or species of conjugation (most of them having their passives), and every verb may be inflected according to one or more of them.

The first of these is regarded as the primitive conjugation, and the rest as derivatives of the same.

The following is a specimen of the first or primitive regular conjugation, fromwhich the moods and tenses will become apparent.

PARTICLES.

Under this appellation arc comprised the adverbs, pre­ positions, conjunctions, and interjections, all of which are indeclinable. The first three consist either of separate words, or of mere prefixes. The former belongs rather to the lexicon than to the grammar, so that the latter only will be noticed here. They are-
