Description of the Book Titled: Ascent to Felicity

This book holds substantial significance for the profound subject matter at hand. Its title, “Ascent to Felicity in the Sciences of Theology and Jurisprudence of Worship” (Mariqi 1-Sa’adat fi ‘Ilmayi ‘l-Tawhid wa l-lidat), encapsulates a succinct yet comprehensive guide to the disciplines under scrutiny, with the latter being firmly rooted in the Hanafi school of legal thought.

The theological aspect constitutes a natural extension of the primary pillar, as the declaration of faith constitutes the foundational bedrock upon which the entire framework of Islamic tenets is erected. In tandem, the jurisprudence of worship pertains to the remaining four pillars.

The text further encompasses a spectrum of legal edicts concerning acts such as ritual slaughter, sacrificial practices, and hunting. Thus, as an introductory discourse, it boasts a commendable breadth of subject matter. Importantly, it maintains a judicious balance, abstaining from delving into extraneous legal and doctrinal intricacies that might otherwise inundate the reader. Rather, it presents a lucid exposition of the most pivotal issues germane to these two scholarly disciplines.

The treatise “Ascent to Felicity” (Maraqi ‘l-Sa’adat) not only excels in its coherent presentation and its direct relevance to the lofty objective at hand but also commands respect for its veracious content. The author, Imam Hasan ibn ‘Ammar al-Shurunbulali, is recognized as a prominent jurist within the later period of the Hanafi jurisprudential tradition. His renown extends to his composition of another seminal work on religious practices, “Nur al-Idah,” which achieved unparalleled acceptance throughout regions where the Hanafi legal school held sway.

This treatise became an integral component of seminary curricula across modern-day Turkey, India, Pakistan, Egypt, the Levant, and the Caucuses. Additionally, Imam Shurunbulali penned two authoritative commentaries on “Nur al-Idaḥ“: the more extensive “Imdad al-Fattaḥ” and its abridged variant, “Maragi ‘l-Falah,” both of which garnered widespread acclaim. Notably, the “Imdad” is referenced over seventy times within the esteemed ‘Allama Ibn ‘Abidin’s magnum opus, “Radd al-Mubtar,” which remains a foremost legal reference within the later Hanafi legal tradition across the Muslim world, despite its coverage limited to just five chapters.

The fact that Ibn Abidin repeatedly draws upon the “Imdad” underscores its status as a seminal juridical opus, of which the present text serves as a condensed exposition. This also attests to the juristic acumen of Imam Shurunbulali. Indeed, Ibn Abidin specifically designates Imam Shurunbulali as “dhi l-ta’alif al-shahira,” signifying “one who authored the very well-known works [of jurisprudence],” and as “faqih al-nafs,” a title that conveys the utmost reverence and esteem accorded by one jurist to another. In his monumental work “Radd al-Muhtar,” Ibn Abidin bestows this distinction upon only one other jurist, the 6th-century luminary Qadikhan.
