The Meaning and Types of Dreams

Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar, may Allah have Mercy upon him, said: “Al-Qadi Abu Bakr Ibn al-Arabi has said: “Dreams are perceptions placed in the heart of a person, in the hands of an angel or a devil, either in the form of names, (true nature), or surnames, (interpretation), or confusion. They are equivalent to thoughts and ideas in wakefulness, because they may come in a regular order, in the form of a story, or naturally.” However, Abu Ishaaq has said: “Al-Qadi Abu Bakr lbn at-Tayyib thinks that dreams are beliefs. He justified his argument by saying that a dreamer may see himself as an animal or a bird, for example, which is not perception; therefore, it must be a belief, as it may be unlike the thing perceived.” ((Fa’th al-Bari, (12/352,353).))

However, the reader should know that not all the things that a dreamer sees in his sleep could have a meaning for interpretation. The dreamer may see one of the following three things:

1- Confused, false dreams from Satan, as in the story of the man who said to the Prophet: “I saw in a dream that I had been beheaded, then I followed it (the severed head) and put it back in its place.” Allah’s Messenger?
