DUTIFULNESS TO PARENTS – In the Light of the Holy Qur’an and the Authentic Sunnah

Book Description

And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” (Qur’an 31:14)

Dutifulness to parents is one of the most important aspects of Islam. The Holy Qur’an and the Authentic Sunnah both emphasize the importance of treating parents with kindness, love, and respect. This book, “Dutifulness to Parents in the Light of the Holy Qur’an and the Authentic Sunnah,” by Nitham Sakkijha, is a comprehensive guide to understanding and implementing this important aspect of Islamic faith.

The book starts with a Publisher’s Note, emphasizing the importance of dutifulness to parents in Islam. It reminds the readers that Allah has commanded people to be kind and loyal to their parents and that Islam further emphasizes obedience to parents as a divine order, act of worship, and human attribute. The note also highlights the adverse effects that can result from the lack of dutifulness to parents.

The book is divided into several chapters, each discussing a different aspect of dutifulness to parents. The first chapter discusses the Qur’an’s commandment regarding parents. It explains how Allah has enjoined upon man to be dutiful and good to his parents and reminds the readers that the mother bore the child in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship.

The second chapter discusses how dutifulness to parents is one of the Prophet’s noted characteristics. It explains how the Prophet Muhammad (2) was known for his kindness and respect towards his parents and how he advised his followers to do the same. The chapter also explains how dutifulness to parents follows immediately after worshipping Allah and how it admits one to Paradise, whereas undutifulness leads to Hell-fire.

The third chapter discusses the importance of parental pleasure and how it is closely linked to Allah’s pleasure. The chapter explains how undutifulness to parents is forbidden and how it is a grave sin. It also highlights how dutifulness to parents precedes fighting in Allah’s cause (Jihad) and how leaving Jihad for the purpose of serving parents is a noble act.

The fourth chapter discusses how dutifulness to parents is one of the righteous deeds one can invoke Allah with. It explains how parents’ pleasure precedes the wife’s pleasure and how dutifulness to the mother precedes dutifulness to the father. The chapter also explains how parents’ invocations are answerable.

The fifth chapter discusses kindness to parents and how the parents’ favor to their children is great. It reminds the readers that abusing and cursing one’s parents is a great sin and that the son is of his father’s earnings. The chapter also discusses dutifulness to parents after their death and how parents should raise their children well to make them righteous.

The book concludes with a chapter on the importance of understanding the rights of parents and consciously seeking their pleasure. It reminds the readers that dutifulness to parents is not only a divine order but also an act of worship and a human attribute. The chapter emphasizes that dutifulness to parents is the source of all happiness because it pleases Allah.

In addition to the main text, the book also includes a glossary of terms, a transliteration chart, and symbols used in the book. The glossary is a helpful tool for readers who may not be familiar with some of the Arabic terms used in the book.
