From the Book
The Rise of Islam
Islam, a religion accepted by more than 240 million human beings in our time, was preached by Muham- med in the early part of the 7th century a.d. in Arabia.
Before giving a summary of this great man’s life, it will not be superfluous to give a brief account of the Arabic Peninsula and its population.
It will enable us to affirm that Arabia, far from being confined to a splendid isolation, as is often supposed, had been open to external influences for a very long time, and the politico-religious revolution realised by Muhammed was already being prepared for by conditions existing before his time. ARABIA, Arabia is called “Djazirat-al-Arab” by the Arabs, and means the Arabic Peninsula.
The Turks and the Persians name it “Arabistan.” It is a plateau with volcanic mountains on the west and south and sloping gently towards the Persian Gulf and the plains of the Euphrates.
In area it is about one fourth that of Europe, and may be divided natu- rally into two parts: Tihama (coastal region), and Nejd (central plateau) which is surrounded by deserts.
