KITAABUT TAHAARAH THE BOOK OF PURIFICATION AND PURITY

There are two types of Najaasah:

a) Najaasah Haqeeqiyyah (b) Najaasah Hukmiyyah.

Najaasah Haqeeqiyyah is divided into three types:

1) Mughallathah (2) Mukhaffafah (3) Mutawassitah

1) Mughallathah (Major Najaasah). Dogs, swine, and whatever comes out from their bodies.

2) Mukhaffafah (Minor Najaasah). The urine of a male baby less

than two years old who has consumed nothing but breast-milk.

3) Mutawassitah (Medium Najaasah). Every other Najaasah falls under this category. Here are a few examples:

  • Wine or any other alcoholic beverage.
  • That which comes out of the bodies of man and animals, except dogs and swine, e.g. urine, pus, etc. (Dogs and swine are Mughallathah.)
  • The urine of a baby girl who is only breast-fed.
  • Dead animals that have not been slaughtered according to Shari’ah law.
  • The hair of non-slaughtered dead animals and the hair of animals that cannot be eaten.
  • The hide of all non-slaughtered dead animals.
  • The milk of animals that cannot be eaten.
  • Flowing blood.

Important points

  • If a hunting dog or arrow within the Shari’ah laws of hunting kills hunted animals, then both the skin and flesh of such hunted animals are pure.
  • The law regarding hair attached to an animal during its life is the same as the law of that particular animal. The hair and wool of animals that can be eaten are pure, provided that they have been separated from a living animal or remained on the animal at the time of slaughtering.
  • The hide of animals that cannot be eaten is impure even if the animal was slaughtered. These skins will only become pure after tanning and washing.
