Progressions Rays and Houses in Medieval Islamic Astrology – A Mathematical Classification by J. Casulleras And J. P. Hogendijk
Progressions Rays and Houses in Medieval Islamic Astrology
The history of applied mathematics in medieval Islamic civilization is the subject of this study.
The three astrological notions of houses, rays, and progressions, as well as their mathematical meanings, will be discussed.
We present these principles in Section 2 and explain why they are important to astrologers. Different mathematical methods could be used to define the homes, rays, and progressions. J. D. North (1986) was the first to classify medieval house-definition systems, and E. S. Kennedy expanded on his classification (1996).
The goal of this study is to create a classification for rays and progressions that is similar to North and Kennedy’s classification for homes. Our classification is based on the works of a number of contemporary Islamic scientific historians.
O. Schirmer (1934) provided a definition and reference for the use of progressions among Arabs, while E. S. Kennedy and H. Krikorian-Preisler produced a significant study on the rays in the Islamic world (1972).
Calvo offered an account of the settlement of astrological concerns in al-Andalus using analogical tools in 1990. (published in 1998).
Relevant medieval Arabic texts have been published or examined, significant older writings on Islamic astronomical devices have been collected in Sezgin 1990-1991, and King has written a complete book on the subject (2005).
