This is chapter, (Al-Fatihah) because of its tremendous importance, virtue, and nobility books have been written about it alone like Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah wrote a separate individual treatise about it that is highly beneficial. 2

When you read the existing explanations (for Al­ Fatihah) that exist, you find that Shaykhul Islam has condensed all of those explanations most important matters in his treatise.

At the forefront of those explanations is “Tafseer At-Tabari” which is the greatest in existence today because of its distinguished characteristics that do not exist in any other explanation that has been found or heard of. Anyone who has read this (Tafseer At-Tabari) explanation scrutinizing it with precision would arrive at this conclusion.

Also, the student of Shaykhul Islam (mercy of Allaah be upon him) Ibn Qayyim isolated this chapter for explanation within his well-known book “Madarijul Salikeen Sharhu Manazilis Sa’ireen Lil-Harawi’. This explanation was taken and isolated in this book as an independent explanation for Al-Fatihah. 3

This magnificent chapter has many names, and many names indicate the nobility of the appellation. From its names are:

• AI-Fatihah (The Opening). It is called this because the prayer opens with it in the beginning and for other reasons.
• The Magnificent Quran
• The Seven Most Repeated
• The Healer
• The Sufficient.

The meaning of it being “the sufficient” because it is sufficient and independent of anything else while other things are not sufficient from it, if you recite the whole Quran from Baqarah in one unit of prayer from the units of prayer until the chapter of Naas then you prayer would not be correct, rather it would be null and void. At the same time if you limit or shorten the whole prayer with reciting Al-Fatihah truly the prayer would be accepted.

This is the meaning of it being “the sufficient”. Every one of its meanings indicates a noble meaning and a noble meaning proves the high status of this tremendous chapter.
