10. MUDTARIB
A report that one or more narrators have transmitted in different ways; whilst being equal in strength such that it is not possible to grant preponderance to one over another nor is it possible to reconcile between them.
Elsewhere it has been described thus: The chain or text which is differed upon Is Mudtarib according to the people of this science
The idtirab can either be in the chain or in the text. Example of Idtirab in chain: Sayyiduna Ali & narrates from the Messenger of Allah & let him say: “Al hamdu lillah dla kulli hal’ then it should be said to him: ‘yar-hamukAllah”® then the one who sneezed should that he said: “When one of you sneezes then reply with the prayer: ‘yahdikum-Allah wa yuslihu balakum’®’ Explanation:
The basis of this hadith rests on Muhammad ibn Abdu’l Rahman ibn Aba Layla and those who narrated from him are in disagreement.
Yahya al-Qattan, Ali ibn Mus’hir, Mansir ibn Abi Aswad, Aba Awanah, Ibn Abi Dhi’yb and others have narrated this hadith with the following chain: from Muhammad ibn Abdu’l Rahman ibn Abi Layla from his brother Yisa, from his father from Ali ibn Abt Talib
