Chapter TwoHealth Development2.1IntroductionFrom an Islamic perspective health is considered as one of the greatest blessings that Allahbestowed on human kind. The human body is considered as a gift from Allah and as a trusteehe carries the responsibility to provide it with the best care and nutrition. Since healthpromotion is a natural component of an Islamic society, Muslim schools have a responsibilityto make the youth aware of the principles in the Qur ‘أ¤n and Hadith that will lead to a healthylifestyle. In this chapter, scientific data will be utilised, wherever relevant, as an applied toolto provide a better understanding of the Islamic spirit, so that the youth may appreciate thewisdom in the application of these principles. he teachings of Islam that promote the health of an individual include recommended dietaryhabits and manners, hygiene and oral health, fasting, the prohibition of intoxicants andimmoral lifestyles. However, the focus on health is not just on a personal level but also on astructural and organisational level. Leaders and policy makers are obliged to develop healthcare systems in order to promote individual, environmental and community health.2.
