THE ART OF READING THE QURAN
Tajwd (Arabic: tajwd, IPA: [tadwid], ‘elocution’) is a collection of principles for correctly pronouncing the letters with all of their properties and utilizing the numerous traditional methods of recitation (Qira’at) when reciting the Quran.
The Arabic word tajwd comes from the verb (jawada), which comes from the triliteral root — (j-w-d), which means to improve or make anything better. In reciting the Qur’an, it means giving each letter its its place.
Because each reciter had their own set of tajwid norms, there was a lot of overlap between them, the history of Quranic recitation is linked to the history of qira’at.
The earliest recorded science for tajwid was developed by Abu Ubaid al-Qasim bin Salam (774-838 CE), who named the laws of tajwid and wrote them down in his book al-Qiraat.
He composed around 25 reciters, including the seven mutawatir reciters.
He turned reality into a science with established rules, words, and enunciation, which was passed down via generations of reciters.
