Chapters 5-30. This section is a statement of the tenets of Islam, as accepted by the Sufis: the purpose of this section, as I have pointed out, is to prove that Sufism as a system lies within and not without the bounds of orthodoxy. Kalabadhi ’s words in this connection are significant: “These are the true doctrines of the Sufis.

let any man study and examine their discourse and books, and he will know that what we have related is true.

Indeed, but for our being loath to make a long discussion, we would have quoted, chapter and verse from their books for every point we have mentioned, for all this is not set down sufficiently clearly in the books”.

It should be noted that chapters 21 and 22 (Of Gnosis, Of the Nature of Gnosis) appear to be misplaced in this section, and more properly belong to the third part.
