THE HOLY KORAN IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

The Holy Koran has become a focal point of scholarly interest in the United States — one facet of a broader interest that extends to Islam in general.

The growing concern of American scholars and theologians with Islamic and Arabic studies, combined with the expanding attraction to the interdisciplinary study of foreign areas and religions, have led to a proliferation of publications on these subjects.

The present bibliography, selected from the vast Koranic holdings of the Library of Congress, is designed to guide the scholarly and general public in the use of significant books and journals dealing with The Holy Koran and Koranic studies.

The guide is divided into five major parts: (1) a listing of manuscripts of The Holy Koran, facsimile, and tafsir (i.e., commentaries on The Holy Koran);

 (2) printed texts of The Holy Koran in the original Arabic, the language in which it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad; (3) interpretations (translations) in forty languages;

 (4) citations on The Holy Koran in special formats, particularly microfilm and sound recordings; and

(5) studies about The Holy Koran, both books and articles, in a number of languages. Since the holdings of the Library are immense in this area, the works selected have been limited to titles that are considered of basic significance for the understanding of the different aspects and concerns of Koranic studies.

 Citations to articles in Arabic were taken from Majallat al-Azhar, 1930-19881, an authoritative source of Sunni Islam, while Index Islamicus, 1906-19882, was a primary source for references to non-Arabic articles. All periodical sources have been checked against the Library’s holdings.
