From the Book: It is well established that the different narrations of a Hadith serve to explain one another.

Therefore, these two narrations show that the understanding of ‘Laa ilaha illAllah’ is, ‘Worship Allah Alone without associating any partners with him.’

The same point can be seen in the Hadith recorded by Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah said, “Islam is built in five pillars: the testification of La ilaha illAllah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messen­ger; the establishment of the prayer; the giving of the wealth­tax; performing pilgrimage to the House; and fasting the month of Ramaqan.”

Bukhari records another version of the Hadith with the words, “Islam is built upon five pillars: faith in Allah and His Messenger; … “; Muslim has a version with the words, “Islam is built upon five pillars: that Allah be singled out Alone; … “; and he also has another version with the words, “Islam is built upon five pillars: that Allah be worshipped and everything that is wor­shipped besides Him be rejected; … “

The same point can be seen in the Hadith in which the Messen­ger of Allah(sent Mu’adh to Yemen with the words, “You are going to the People of the Book, so let the first thing you call them to be: Laa ilaha illa Allah … “; in another narration of Bukhari the wording is, ” … so let the first thing you call them to be: that Allah be singled out Alone … “; and in yet another narration the wording is, ” … so let the first thing you call them to be: the wor­ship of Allah.”

Hence all these texts, and many more, show that the understand­ing of this statement is not simply that Allah exists, or that He
