THE STORY OF THE REED

The flawless man (Insan-i Kâmil) is represented by the Ney (flute) mentioned in Rûmî’s stories. The maturation of a human being is depicted by the stages a reed goes through from the reed bed to becoming a ney, which represents the steps of purifying the Nafs (lower self) and refining the heart.

The perfect man, who has come from the world of souls and entered a body made of clay, known as the cage made of flesh, yearns for the original realm in the same manner that the Ney is divorced from the reed bed, and this separation causes it to mourn in sorrow.

A human being undergoes ascetic discipline (riyâda), meditation (murâqaba), reflection (Tafakkur), Divine love, and trials as a result of this yearning until he reaches adulthood and discovers perfection. We live in a materialistic era when individuals are more focused on their physical demands than ever before.

Unfortunately, everything is evaluated according to its material gain; so, there is a tremendous need to see occurrences through the eyes of wisdom from the windows of the heart. To do so, we must reread the works of Sufis such as Bahauddin Naqshbend, Jalaluddin Rumi, and Abdulqadir Geylani, among others.

His works are a treasure trove of knowledge and Divine Realities. Rumi penetrated the depths of man’s heart; he grasped the reality of man and provided us with everlasting beauty treatments.

Other Sufi works like Mathnawi’s, which eloquently communicate spiritual truths by utilizing stories, are scarce. He made the complex subject of spiritual life intelligible to seekers of gnosis by employing stories.
