In the early twenties, the grammar-translation method was dominant, while other aspects of a foreign language were not considered as important. In recent years, the teaching of grammar as part of foreign language instruction has begun to regain its importance. Accordingly, the question now is not “Should grammar be taught?” as much as it is “What is the most effective way to teach grammar?”

Grammar is not a skill in and of itself: it is a supplement to, or even the backbone of, each of the four major skills of language aptitude ­reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Grammar, together with other elements of the language, is the tool that enables learners to comprehend and produce a language effectively.

However, grammar should not be taught as a set of rigid rules in isolation from the language; rather it should be associated with meaning and function.
