ABANDONING THE MADHHABS AL-LA MADHHABIYYA IS THE MOST DANGEROUS BID’AH

It was in the month of Ramadan 1427 H. that we first set into motion our plan of publishing in English the seminal work, Al-La Madhhabiyya: Abandoning the Madhhabs is the Most Dangerous Bid’ah Threatening the Islamic Shari’ah written by one of the greatest scholars we have in our midst, Shaykh Dr. Muhammad Sa’id Ramadān al-Būți (may Allah preserve him).

 By the grace of Allah, one year on, we have the fruit of our efforts before us. We are truly honoured to have facilitated the publication of this groundbreaking book in jurisprudential methodology whose translation into English we felt was long overdue.

We pray Allah preserve our Shaykh, Dr. Muhammad Sa’id Ramadan al-Büți, and allow us to continue to benefit from him. We ask Allah to shower his blessings upon the author’s father, the erudite Mullă Ramadãn al-Būți and pray that his son, Ustādh Muḥammad Tawfiq Ramadan al-Būți, carries on in their family’s great legacy of scholarship.

About the Author

Shaykh Dr. Muhammad Sa’id Ramadan al-Būți was born in 1929 near the village of Jilka, Büțan (Turkish Kurdistan). In 1933 he migrated to Damascus (Syria) together with his father, Mullā Ramadan There the Shaykh followed his father’s footsteps in becoming a leading Shafi’i scholar of this blessed city.

 In Damascus Shaykh al-Bůți completed his secondary studies at the Institute of Islamic Guidance after which he joined the Faculty of Religion at al-Azhar University receiving his degree in 1955.

The following year, he joined the Faculty Arabic at al-A ar. He was appointed as Dean in the Faculty of Religion at Damascus University in 1960, and deputed to al-Azhar University for his doctorate in ușül al-fiqh. In 1965 he was appointed as an instructor in the College of Law at Damascus University.

Later, he was appointed as its Dean, then as the Chief of the Department of Tenets and Religions, and finally as the Head of the Beliefs and Religions Department at the Faculty of Islamic Law.

 Shaykh al-Büți is an active participant in many conferences and symposia. He is a member of the Royal Society of Islamic Civilization Research in Amman, as well as the High Council of Oxford Academy. He lectures regularly in the mosques of Damascus and other Syrian cities. Thousands attend his lectures, in addition to the millions that watch his weekly lectures on Iqra Satellite Television. He writes in several newspapers and journals, and gives Islamic rulings for the masses. Shaykh al-Büți has written over forty books on the sciences of religion, society and many other subjects.
