Biography of Imam Muslim (as)

He is the great scholar, the memorizer, the trustworthy, Abu al- Husayn, Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj ibn Muslim ibn Ward ibn Kawshādh al-Qushayri al-Naysābūrī. It is said that he was from the charges of Qushayr ibn Kab.

His birth:

 There are four different statements concerning his date of birth:

First:

that he was born in the year 201. al-Dhahabi alluded to this in al-ibr when he mentioned that Muslim died at the age of 60; Ibn al-Amād al-Hanbali agreed with this, since he quoted his statement without reply.

Second:

That he was born in the year 202.

Third:

That he was born in the year 204.

And Fourth:

That he was born in the year 206. Al-Hākim related this on the authority of Ibn al-Akhram who said: “Imām Muslim died on Sunday night and was buried on Monday with five days remaining in the month of Rajab in the year 261 at the age of 55.

This statement was confirmed by a body of scholars:

Ibn al-Saläh, and al-Hafiz [ibn Hajr) among them.

Ibn al-Salāh said: “I visited his grave in Naysăbür, where I heard the conclusion of his book al-Sahil and other than it. May we gain benefit from his work as well as others. Amin.”

His upbringing.

 He was raised in a house of knowledge and prominence. His father was from those concerned with educating the people. The student of Imam Mustim Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhäb al-Farra’ said: “His father, Hajjaj ibn Muslim, was from my father’s teachers.”

Imām Muslim began recording traditions in his youth. He first recorded traditions-as al-Dhahabi stated in the year 218 at the age of 12. He heard (traditions) from many scholars, such as Yahya ibn Yahyā at-Tamimi, who died in the year 226.

He is the first person he recorded traditions from in the year 218. He made Hajj in the year 220, when he had still not grown facial hair, and received traditions from al-Qa’nabi in Makkah.

In Naysābür, he recorded traditions from Ishaq ibn Rāhaway, who died in the year 238; and Qutaybah ibn Sa’id, who died in the year 240. Upon his return from Hajj. he recorded traditions in Küfah from Ahmad ibn Yunus and others, as he hastened homeward.

His occupation:

As for his occupation, Imām Muslim was a merchant who owned a shop in Khan Mahmash, where he sold dry goods. He supported himself from properties and estates he owned in Ustuwa.

He was very generous to the people and was given the nickname “the charitable one of Naysābūr.

His travels in seeking knowledge:

 As for his travels in pursuit of learning, Imam Muslim travelled extensively with great enthusiasm and patience in seeking and obtaining knowledge. He was one of the well-known travelers who collected traditions.

He travelled to the Imāms of many different lands. He entered al-Hijāz in the year 220 at the age of 14 to fulfil the obligation of Hajj. He received traditions in Makkah from Suid ibn Manşür, al-Qa’nabi, et al.

In Madinah. ſhe recorded traditions) from Abu Mus’ab al- Zuhri, Ismail ibn Abu Uways et al. He also entered ‘Iraq and recorded traditions in Basrah from al-Qa’nabi and “Ali ibn Nasr al-Jahdani.

In Kūfa, [he recorded traditions from) Ahmad ibn Yönus, ‘Umar ibn Hafs ibn Ghiyath, and Said ibn Muhammad al-Jarmi.

He heard traditions in Baghdad from Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ahmad ibn Muni’, Khalid ibn Khidāsh, ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar al-Qawiwiri, Khalaf ibn Hisham al-Bazzār al-

Muqri”. Surayj ibn Yünus, et al.

In Balkh, he recorded narrations from Qutaybah ibn Sa’id. He also entered al-Rayy on more than one occasion and received traditions there from Muhammad ibn Mihran and Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn Am al-Zunayj. He also entered  ‘Egypt and received (traditions) from Ahmad ibn ‘Abd al- Rahmän al-Wahhabi, ‘Amr ibn Sawwäd, isa iba Hammad Zughibah, and Muhammad ibn Rumh ibn Muhājir.

In Tarikh Damashq (The History of Damascus), Ibn ‘Asākir reported that he entered al-Sham. He said: “He received traditions from Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Saksaki; however, al- Dhahabi rejected this statement).

He said: ‘What is apparent is that he met him during the time of Hajj and never entered al-Sham.’ He also said in the biography of Hisham ibn ‘Ammar. ‘Muslim did not travel to al-Sham and did not meet him.

Whoever claims this is mistaken. In short, according to Ibn ‘Asäkir, Imam Muslim traveled extensively to a number of countries like al-Rayy, al-‘Iraq, Egypt, al-Hijäz (Makkah and Madinah), and Damascus. And — Allāh knows best.

His creed:

As for his creed, Imam Muslim was upon the ideology of the people of Hadith such as the Imāms: Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ishaq ibn Rähaway, al-Bukhari, Abū Zur’ah, et al. Abu ‘Uthman al-şabüni, al-Naysābūri, who died in the year 449, wrote la book) on the creed of the Salaf, che people of Hadith, and mentioned chat one of the signs of the people of the Sunnah is love for the scholars of the Sumah and its helpers.

He quoted from Qutaybah ibn Sa’id the names of a number of scholars and mentioned that love of them is a sign of the people of Hadith.
